Term 4 is well underway which means the school year is almost over.  For many students, Term 4 is not only academically important, it is also one of the busiest times of the year.   It is the perfect opportunity to give a last-minute boost to grades, prepare for exams and brush up on test taking skills by working with a one-on-one educator.   It also allows the student to work on the topics and concepts they haven’t quite mastered before new material is introduced in the new school year. 

Here are five tips to help your child end the school year a high note. 

 
1. Work on subjects that need a boost
Term 4 is a valuable time for one-on-one educators and their students to gain a comprehensive view of their overall progress throughout the year.   It is the perfect opportunity to assess the positive achievements as well as the areas requiring improvement by spending time looking over all schoolwork since the beginning of the year.  If students are between grades, it is a good time to focus on those subjects which could get an easy, last minute grade bump. 
 
2. Keep confidence levels and motivation high
Term 4 is a busy time of year and with the end of the year in sight, motivation levels can decrease.  A one-on-one educator has the flexibility to mix up sessions and keep them interesting by taking the learning outside.  This will maintain drive and ensure the learning continues.
 
3. Exam Techniques
With exams well underway, term 4 is the perfect time to review material and equip students with effective test-taking skills.  Term 4 allows you to spend sessions going over how to prioritise time and work on effective ways to answer questions they may be stuck on. 
 

4. Work on reading skills
Reading comprehension is one of the most important skills for primary students.  They need to understand character development, plot changes and efficiently scan for important information within the story.  Term 4 gives students the opportunity to focus on this skill and continue to practice during the holidays. 
 
5. Work on a plan for continued learning over the school holidays
The school year may be coming to an end, but it’s important to ensure that the learning doesn’t stop.  Continuing regular sessions throughout, is a great way to prevent loss of learning from occurring.  Holiday schedules are different from routines during the school year so scheduling regular learning ensures they start strong in the next school year.
