Becoming a Teacher: Victoria

How to Become a School Teacher in Victoria: A Step-by-Step Guide

Becoming a school teacher in Victoria is a fulfilling journey that requires dedication and the right steps. Whether you're fresh out of school or considering a career change, here's everything you need to know about turning your teaching dreams into reality.

Step 1: Pursue the Right Qualifications

To kickstart your teaching career in Victoria, you’ll need to complete the right educational qualifications. Here’s a breakdown of what’s required:

Step 1. Enroll in an Approved Teaching Course

Most aspiring teachers need to commit to a full-time, four-year program at a university or a recognized institution like some TAFEs and private providers. If full-time study isn't feasible, part-time options are available, although this will extend your study duration.

Your chosen course must be an approved Initial Teacher Education (ITE) program. These programs are tailored to either primary or secondary teaching, but some cover both.

Course Options:

  • Bachelor of Education: A standard four-year degree focusing on teaching.
  • Double Degree: Complete two degrees simultaneously, with one being an approved ITE course, usually over four years.
  • Single Degree + Postgraduate: First earn a single degree, such as in Science or Arts, then complete a two-year postgraduate teaching qualification.

To ensure your course is approved, check the Victorian Institute of Teaching’s list of accredited ITE programs.

Step 2: Register as a Teacher

Once you’ve completed your studies, the next step is to register as a teacher in Victoria. This involves applying to the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) to obtain your teaching registration.

Step 3: Apply for Teaching Jobs

With your registration in hand, you’re ready to start applying for teaching positions. Look for job openings in schools across Victoria, and start the exciting journey of shaping young minds!

Financial Assistance and Scholarships

Good news for future teachers: there’s financial support available! Every Victorian enrolling in a secondary school teaching degree can apply for a scholarship that covers the cost of their studies. This initiative is part of the Victorian Government’s $229.8 million investment aimed at bolstering the teaching workforce.

Scholarships and Financial Help:

  • Secondary School Teaching Degrees: Eligible for scholarships that cover study costs.
  • Other Financial Support: Various options are available to assist with tuition and living expenses.

Pathways Based on Your Background

For Current Students:

Make sure you meet the entry requirements for your chosen teaching degree. This might involve specific VCE subjects. Consult your school’s careers adviser for guidance on selecting the right subjects and university application processes.

For Those with Vocational Experience:

If you hold a certificate of technology or a vocational trade and have substantial industry experience (six to eight years), you can opt for an approved two-year secondary teaching course. These are sometimes called ‘industry entry programs.’

For Graduates and Career Changers:

Postgraduate Studies: If you already have a bachelor’s degree or equivalent, you can pursue a two-year postgraduate education course to become qualified to teach. Ensure your previous studies align with the Victorian curriculum.

Teach for Australia: This program offers a unique route to teaching qualifications. If you have a bachelor’s degree (or are about to earn one) and don’t yet have a teaching degree, you can apply. The program involves teaching in a low socioeconomic area for two years while receiving full pay, professional development, and coaching. Upon completion, you’ll earn a Master of Teaching (Secondary) (Professional Practice).
